Library Adventures | By Kayelona Rakowski
"Library Adventures" is a short story about a girl that goes on many different adventures while she is walking down an aisle in the library. She goes to many different places and times in life while on these different adventures. Come along and see what adventures she goes on while in the library.
Walking slowly along the dusty aisle of the town library, she held out her hand, letting her fingers skim over the spines. When she saw a battered brown book, she brought it out from the others. This was something she enjoyed doing; opening to pages in books and reading snippets of them. She opened the brown book to a middle page and let her eyes fall on the top of the page.
He adjusted his armor and drew his sword, ready for the battle he was to face. This brave soul knew not what his fate was, nor did he care in the moment. All he felt was adrenaline as the king shouted, “Forward!”
To herself, she thought of the outcome of the book. Did this knight live to see the result of this battle? Is there a fair maiden at home waiting for his return? Questions flooded her mind as she returned the book to its dwelling place. She walked further, her eyes searching for the next piece of literature. She stopped by a new blue book, opening it towards the end.
As I look out the window, I see the rain droplets traveling down. I am reminded of the many tears I cried and the more tears to come. I cannot bear the sadness of this life and the grief that accompanies it. I feel like this rain drop; alone, winding its own path down.
She felt the pain in the passage and set it back, wondering what must have happened for the character to grow so depressed. A dark red book a few shelves over caught her eye. Upon reaching it, she opened to a beginning page.
The prince softly took the foreign princess’s hand in his and kissed her knuckles. The medals on the prince’s chest gleamed in the chandelier light as he smiled. He felt the eyes of his parents upon his back, harsh and unforgiving.
She granted herself a day dream of living in a castle and the luxuries that come with it. She also dreamed about the hardships and pressures that would accompany a life of royalty. She decided she had time for one more peek before she had to depart from her second home. She picked up a light green book, looking to be barely read, and opened to a beginning page.
Kids of all ages ran around her making quite a ruckus. She felt as though she could rip her hair out at any moment because of the overwhelming craziness of the room. Wailing from young children and laughing from older children filled the daycare room as she counted down the moments they could be picked up.
She felt bad for the overwhelmed woman working in the daycare. She imagined herself in that position and about how she would handle it just the same.
As she concluded her time at the library, she thought about the many adventures she had gone on, all while standing in place. The emotions the characters felt were projected onto her and it amazed her mere words on paper could do that. As she waved to the librarian, she was already looking forward to the next time she would visit the library.
